Cameraman John en zijn geluidsman Gus zijn bevlogen in hun werk. Ze voelen zich niet echt betrokken bij de gebeurtenissen die ze vastleggen, maar concentreren zich vooral op het vastleggen zelf. Wanneer er eind jaren 60 nogal wat politieke onrust ontstaat in de VS en ook John daar indirect slachtoffer van wordt, realiseert hij zich pas wat er eigenlijk allemaal om hem heen gebeurt. Dit vooral in het licht van de verantwoordelijkheid van zijn beroep als journalist.
