De Morgans zijn een liefdevolle, zwarte boerenfamilie in Louisiana, 1933. Een familiecrisis ontstaat wanneer de vader veroordeeld wordt voor een klein vergrijp en naar een gevangen-kamp wordt gestuurd. Na enkele weken stuurt de moeder haar oudste zoon van 11 jaar op weg om zijn vader te bezoeken in het kamp. De reis wordt een soort van odyssee voor de jongen.
